Saving For College - How To Start

No matter how old your child might be, it isn't ever too late to save for college. In order to save for college, you will need to start somewhere. You can start by taking a few dollars and putting it into an envelope. This will be labelled as the college fund for your child.

If you smoke, you can quit and use the remaining money that you used to use on cigarettes to save for college for your child. Smoking and other bad habits tend to add up. If you play the lottery, the chances of you winning are very slim. Yet if you use the money that you spend on lottery tickets to save for college for your child, then the chances will be very good and he or she will have a far brighter future.

There is no magic time for you to begin saving for college. In an ideal manner, every parent would start to save for college the minute their child is born. But this is impossible in certain cases as several parents struggle to make ends meet. Other parents tend to find that they borrow the money that they do save for college because they get into a financial bind and then find themselves unable to pay it back.

Even if your child is ready to go to college, it is never too late to save for college. You will simply have to start putting money aside in a safe place that is set aside especially for college. Even if you begin with a few dollars a day, that will be far less that you or your child will ever have to borrow in order to be able to attend college.

Many parents sometimes feel that they have plenty of time to save for college when their child is born. Therefore, they neglect to do this because they simply do not have the money to put aside. However, even if you set aside $20 a week, by the time your child is ready to go to college, there will be more than enough money, if you invest it wisely in an account that gets compound interest.

If your child feels ready to go to college and you do not have any money put aside because you didn't save for their college years, rest assured that you can still start now. Indeed, you can set aside a certain amount each week and pay for the college on a timely basis. Several colleges will also allow you to make some timely payments for the education as well as the costs of the books. Every bit that you save for college now will be less than you will ever have to borrow.

If you cannot manage to save for college, you should try to set aside as much as you can in order to help your child to apply for a grant. There are various grants which are available for people who cannot afford to save for college but whose children would still like to attend school.
